Community Recycling Project.
The Foundation’s first project has been the Community Recycling Project - an initiative that started in November 2022 to create income opportunities, provide education about recycling, and close the loop with Bitprop’s environmentally friendly construction design. In late October, five unemployed members of iLithia Park went through a recycling training programme, before going door to door in order to drop off collection bags and explain what each resident should do.
Once a week, they collect bags of recycling from residents, which are then sold to buy-back centers for a fee. Not only are our recyclers earning an income, but they are also spreading awareness in a community that had previously never been exposed to recycling. Additionally, all plastic collected is sold back to CRDC - the company responsible for making the sustainable bricks and concrete that are now used in all Bitprop builds.
Meet our recyclers.
Nothemba Maqhubela
38 years old
Nothemba is a single mother of two children, and joined the project as a means of creating an income for herself and her family.
Nothemba thinks that the recycling project can help as it offers many opportunities for unemployed members of the community and it gives them a chance to learn about recycling.
“I hope to see this project going far - to other townships, countries and places, to show people how we can work together, unified as a community doing recycling.”
Sisanda Tshofela
27 years old
Sisanda is a single mother of one child.
Before joining the recycling project, Sisanda says that they used to throw plastic away - they didn’t know that you could make bricks out of it. Now, she has learned a lot about recycling.
“I hope that the project doesn’t end, that it continues and moves forward because it makes a difference for us.”
Ncedikazi Gazi
36 years old
Ncedikazi is a single mother of one child.
Ncedikazi is the hustler of the team and is always willing to try new things and find ways to create opportunities for herself, her family, and her community.
“In the future, I see this project educating young children in communities about waste separation of paper, plastic and cardboard. Then on the other hand, you as an individual can grow in the business and start a company or an NGO, and teach people about recycling. There is a lot that you can do!”

A look at 2023.
The Community Recycling Project will continue throughout 2023, with the potential of expanding to new communities and providing income opportunities for additional unemployed community members.
Several additional projects are in the pipeline for 2023. These include a ‘greenification’ project to bring more diverse plant life to the currently bare streets found in many of the township communities, as well as initiatives that develop formal education qualifications to provide stakeholders with the tools to take their entrepreneurial journeys further while gaining employable skills.
